For many of us, there’s that period of time after a breakup where all you want to do is isolate yourself from the world and wallow in self-pity, playing the sappiest romance films and love songs. Exsonvaldes’s latest album “Near The Edge Of Something Beautiful” is the musical equivalent of that much-needed shoulder to cry on, acting as a great soundtrack for a love gone awry or a life on the verge of collapse.

Hailing from the City of Love, the four Parisians that make up Exsonvaldes would know a thing or two when it comes to matters of the heart. Their collection of slow to mid-tempo music is undeniably romantic with subtle strokes of delicately pretty melodies, yearning lyrics, and shimmering instrumental interludes that bring up a sense of nostalgia. The band’s influences are obvious upon immediate listen, as they take inspiration from melancholy experts such as Radiohead and Death Cab for Cutie. Exsonvaldes’s vocalist, who simply goes by Simon, emulates Thom Yorke’s frail pipes down to a tee from the detached, yet sensual, delivery to the gut-wrenchingly wispy falsetto.

“Near The Edge of Something Beautiful” is a fine musical accompaniment for teen dramas and romantic films that include scenes of a downward spiral of misery or an anguishing phase of heartache, where a character reminisces and is nostalgic for a past relationship. Exsonvaldes’s music can supply your film or TV show with the emotional depth that is sure to tug at the heart strings of the intended audience.
